Verdun battle today12/21/2023 The horrific bloodshed even spun off another battle the Somme where the English attacked to relieve some of the pressure on Verdun to the south. This entry is part 10 of a 10-part series on World War I. No battle had ever been fought on such a scale before, and the fight would drag on for 10 months, from February 21 to December 16. The aim was to crush the French army before the Allies grew in strength through the full deployment of British. It was originally planned by the German Chief of General Staff, Erich von Falkenhayn to secure victory for Germany on the Western Front. I've gathered photographs of the Great War from dozens of collections, some digitized for the first time, to try to tell the story of the conflict, those caught up in it, and how much it affected the world. The Battle of Verdun, 21 February-15 December 1916, became the longest battle in modern history. Though the events of World War I have now fallen out of living memory, the remnants remain - scarred landscapes, thousands of memorials, artifacts preserved in museums, photographs, and the stories passed down through the years - stories of such tremendous loss. The battle, which lasted 300 days and cost more than 300,000. Bomb disposal units in France and Belgium dispose of tons of discovered shells every year. The Battle of Verdun, in northeastern France, was the longest sustained conflict of World War I. The first World War continues to kill to this day - in March of 2014, two Belgian construction workers were killed when they encountered an unexploded shell buried for a century. Revolutions spawned in Russia and Germany, arbitrary redrawing of national borders set the stage for decades of conflict, harsh reparation demands inspired the rise of Nazi Germany and the onset of World War II. However, after the sound of gunfire was silenced on Armistice Day, the deaths continued to mount. On the morning of February 21, 1916, 1,220 German artillery pieces of all caliber opened a barrage on the French positions in front of the old fortress of Verdun. Considering it is the key to understanding the huge loss of life on the Somme, this is a strange feature of modern battlefield tourism. A French and German battlefield, it is rarely visited by other nationalities. Millions of grenades were fired, the remains of which are still poisoning the ground today. The full horror of 20th century industrialised warfare was nowhere more intense than at Verdun in 1916. Assassin Gavrilo Princip fired the first shot in what was to become a horrific years-long bloodbath. The Battle of Verdun lasted ten months in 1916. The Battle of Verdun is a French symbol of patriotism and symbolizes the French sufferings of WW1. Of the minimum 700,000 casualties, about 300,000 died. Wild marsh orchids and white swallow-wort sprout. June 28, 2014, marked the 100th anniversary of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The 10 month battle had inflicted 350,000 casualties on the Germans and 370,000 on the French, though some estimate French casualties as high as 550,000. Today, the Verdun forest in France teems with so much charming life that it seems straight out of a storybook.
